Every once in a while we hear about people who choose to forgive those who did something to them that produced tragic consequences. One example is the Amish Community of Nickel Mines, PA, who forgave Charles Roberts, a man who killed five Amish children before taking his own life. Members of the Amish Community attended Robert’s funeral, to support Robert’s widow and three children, and have continued to do the work of forgiveness in their community. Such stories give each of us hope. If others can forgive acts of such unimaginable violence, then perhaps we can forgive those who have wronged us. No matter how deep our hurt, we are all given opportunities to forgive and to be forgiven.
We all make mistakes. We all say or do the wrong thing without meaning to be hurtful. Sometimes we are intentionally hurtful or are even cruel. We need to ask for forgiveness. Will we have the courage to do so?
There are other times we are injured and will benefit from the opportunity to forgive others. Are we willing to forgive? These may be some of the hardest, yet most life-giving, choices we make in our relationships. Each week we will create an environment where authentic learning and conversations can occur about forgiveness, faith, and wellness. Part of the journey of forgiveness is engaging in a spiritual practice and you will be invited to try a simple practice no matter what your current faith background. The program is grounded in Luke 10:27 (“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind) – the four areas of whole-person wellness. We will all work on “Forgiveness” through the process of FAITH Steps and you will discover things about yourself in the process.
